The Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.2 S completes Nikon's triumvirate of f/1.2 S-Line primes alongside the 50mm and 85mm, and in doing so gives photographers the most versatile and compelling set of fast primes available for any mirrorless system. The 35mm focal length is one of the most beloved in photography — wide enough to establish context and environment, tight enough to isolate a subject and render flattering perspective — making this lens equally at home for documentary work, street photography, environmental portraiture, lifestyle shoots, and low-light event coverage.
The f/1.2 maximum aperture is the defining feature, and the one that changes what is possible in difficult light. At f/1.2, you can shoot comfortably in candlelight, on a dimly lit stage, or in the golden hour's last minutes without reaching for flash or sacrificing shutter speed. The background separation at this aperture is extraordinary — subjects emerge from their environment with a three-dimensional quality that is impossible to achieve with slower glass. An 11-bladed rounded diaphragm ensures the out-of-focus areas render as smooth, circular highlights that complement rather than distract from your subject.
The optical formula comprises 17 elements in 15 groups, including three ED elements and one aspherical ED element that work together to control spherical aberration, chromatic fringing, and distortion across the entire aperture range from f/1.2 to f/16. Nikon's ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings deliver the anti-reflection performance the S-Line demands, keeping flare and ghosting under control even when shooting towards strong light sources. Autofocus is driven by a dual Stepping Motor (STM) multi-focus system that is fast, near-silent, and accurate — equally well-suited to tracking moving subjects in stills and maintaining smooth, quiet focus pulls in video production.
